Science: Avenue Primary working with the Principia Space Mission!

principia-patch

We are very excited to announce that Avenue Primary has been selected to take part in  the ‘ESERO-UK Tim Peake Primary Project’!

On December 15th 2015, the European Space Agency (ESA) are sending their astronaut, Tim Peake, to the International Space Station for an exciting 6 month mission!  Tim has selected the name ‘Principia’ for the mission, to celebrate Isaac Newton’s ground-breaking text on physics, which described the principal laws of motion and gravity on which all space travel depends.

We will be working with ESERO-UK, the UK Space Education Office, who have created an exciting project for UK primary schools!

Tim was born in Chichester, West Sussex. He is married and has two children. He will take part in spacewalks and complex scientific research and experiments in the Columbus laboratory module, which is attached to the front of the 400-ton space station.

Tim is the only Briton ever to be accepted into the European Astronaut Corps and his mission will make him the first UK national to travel and work in space, under the Union Jack, on a British Government-funded mission!

Other British astronauts have either secured private funding – such as Helen Sharman, who flew on a Russian rocket in 1991 – or taken dual citizenship, such as Michael Foale and Piers Sellers, who flew missions on the US space shuttle.

This is a fantastic website that explains what the mission will entail, tells you much more about Tim and has a countdown to launch!! (To the second!) https://principia.org.ukYear 5 will be working extensively on the project, through their next topic and there will plenty of opportunities for children across the school to be involved, through assemblies, lessons, playground ‘train like an astronaut’ activities and even family challenges!!

Miss Bullock and I have already met with Jo Fox – our Space Ambassador and we are very excited about the project!

If any adults are interested in following Tim on Twitter, I am reliably informed that he does run his account himself, so it is possible to contact him directly on behalf of your child.

His handle is @astro_timpeake

We will keep you updated of further information about this exciting project!!
