Reception: Beddington Park River Dipping

Curriculum link, Early Learning Goal 14: Understanding the world: children know about similarities and differences in relation to living things. They make observations of animals and plants.

Thank you to all of you who came along to the Reception Wandle Trust/Avenue Primary event at Beddington Park on Friday (16th June). It was lovely to see the children enjoying themselves with their families while learning about the river habitat and some of its inhabitants! Half the group started with a river bank safari, identifying different animals along the way, while the other group paddled in the river (water shoes or wellies on to protect feet) and helped to identify different river animals! We found many creatures, including shrimp, water spiders and bullheads. The prize catch of the day was a pair of five-year old sticklebacks! After looking at the animals closely, we released them back into the river carefully.

A huge thank you to David and Verity from the Wandle Trust for making this outing possible. If you would like to find out more about the Wandle Trust, please see their website:

Years 5 & 6 Overton Grange STEM afternoon

The STEM event at Overton was a great success, and it was lovely to see Avenue families getting so involved with the activities. (Some even ate crickets, silk worms and giant ants!!!) To have almost fifty families in attendance was fantastic, and really positive for the future of STEM learning!

We hope to be involved in the next event and look forward to continuing to work with Ms Banda and Overton Grange, with our Year 6 STEMinions club!

As part of ‘Science Week’, Overton Grange are hosting a STEM event on Tuesday 14th March.

Thank you to all of you who returned your forms by Monday, 6th March – all 34 of you have your places reserved!

Key information:
* The event runs from 4pm to 7pm
* As you enter the school, there will be a register, reminding you of the 4 events you have signed up for
*When you have finished your first four workshops, you can try as many of the others as is possible in the time that is left!

If your child usually attends STEMinions club, they are very welcome to attend the event – with an adult.

(Members of the club were reminded that there is NO STEMinions club tomorrow.)

Avenue Primary Academy Maths Day 2016

On Friday 14th October children will be participating in a maths day.  Activities will include a Pokemon Go Times Table challenge for Key Stage 2 and a Pokemon Go Number bond challenge for Key Stage 1.  Children will also be completing a variety of problem solving and investigative challenges throughout the day.

Infant Reading Scheme

Thank you to all of the infant parents who have been patient whilst we have been updating our infant reading scheme. It has taken a while to sort out the old books and establish how many new books we needed to order. We have a mixture of reading scheme books e.g. Oxford Reading Tree, Project X, Bug Club etc. as well as a range of ‘real’ books. The books in the scheme have now been book banded. Information about book bands can be found on the website below.

Over the summer holidays please encourage your children to read for their own enjoyment (see previous post about The Big Friendly Read).

The BFR (Big Friendly Read!)

Big Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge 2016

Last week the children took home a leaflet about The Big Friendly Read.

The summer reading challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. You can sign up at your local library, then read six library books of your choice to complete the challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way, and it’s FREE to take part! Just contact your local library. Visit the link below to find out which libraries are participating!

The Summer Reading Challenge website helps you keep track of your reading all year round: find new books to read, take part in competitions and play games.

There are also a variety of other activities being held at local libraries during the school holidays. Sutton Central library offers play dough for nursery age children, phonics club for reception age children and Summer journal writing for older children. Pick up a leaflet at the library for a detailed list of events happening over the summer holidays.
